A Belgian national who has lived in several European countries and the USA, Alain builds upon a proven track record in all aspects of human resources management, over global geographies, in different industries, with companies of various sizes. In addition, he has served in General, Sales, Manufacturing and Project Management roles as well as Principal Consultant, Guest Speaker and Professor on business school programmes. Moreover, Alain participated in several company acquisitions, both as acquirer and acquiree.
Alain is passionate in sharing his experience and helping organisations going through organisational, cultural or behavioural changes with performance improvement through processes, systems and projects; leadership development through executive coaching and training; change facilitation through alignment of purpose and mass engagement; transition management either through systemic methodology or interim. He is particularly at ease in multinational and multicultural environments and situations requiring constructive confrontation of sensitive issues, which is the prime purpose of O plc, the consulting company he created. O plc is also structured and more than able to support any organisation in every aspect of human resources management including executive recruitment and selection. Alain learned the basics of human resources management in Belgium with Federal-Mogul, the world’s largest automotive spare parts manufacturer. He then moved to international training and development with MCE, the European arm of the American Management Association, and led MCE’s research and consultancy in compensation and benefits - now Willis Towers Watson Data Services. His next step was with Valenite, a leader in cutting tools for the automotive and oil industries, to establish their European Headquarters. When Valenite was acquired by GTE - now Verizon, Alain led Valenite Europe’s integration into GTE before being appointed Vice-President Human Resources and Total Quality in GTE’s Geneva European Headquarters, focussing on continuous improvement, process reengineering, organisation restructuring. Then, 17 years after leaving Federal-Mogul in Belgium, he was called back to join their Geneva EMEA Headquarters, to consolidate different cultures and streamline an organisation emerging from a series of acquisitions, at a time of structural changes in the automotive industry sector.
During the next 15 years, Alain gained experience in the health care industry. He first joined Serono - now Merck-Serono - to create the first international human resources function in the group, responsible for EMEA sales and corporate marketing divisions, at a time of unprecedented growth and new product development, with several creations of companies in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. Next, Alain was attracted to Covance, a leading clinical research organisation, to become Vice-President Global Human Resources for their Central Laboratories, spending a vast amount of his time in Indianapolis and Princeton, playing a key role establishing its global organisation moving away from a federation of independent units. Alain was then recruited by Ipsen, a French specialty pharmaceutical company, to establish their first Executive Committee level Human Resources position with the remit of transforming the culture of the company towards performance and internationalisation. He also participated greatly in the company’s IPO.
Over recent years, Alain has become very involved in the employability of the young generation, more specifically in what business education should provide as skills to their (post-) graduates. To this end he has become a partner of the FutureWork Forum as well as Accreditation Board Member and Corporate Peer Reviewer for EFMD quality certification of business schools and programmes.
